ABOUT

The Sofia Art and Music Festival (SAMF) brings together composers, conductors, artists, and performers from around the world for two weeks of creation, performance, and exchange in Sofia — one of Europe’s most vibrant artistic capitals. In partnership with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, SAMF offers participants the chance to rehearse, perform, and premiere new works in the historic Bulgaria Hall, surrounded by the city’s rich cultural and architectural beauty.

Mission

A Global Arts United initiative, SAMF is devoted to the meeting of musical voices — emerging and established — through the shared process of creation, rehearsal, and performance. Set in the heart of Bulgaria, the festival embraces Sofia’s rich artistic life and the extraordinary talent of its musicians, offering participants a space where new music and tradition converge. By fostering international collaboration and cultural exchange, SAMF continues GAU’s mission of connecting global artistry through meaningful partnerships.

Why Sofia

Sofia stands at the crossroads of Europe and history — a city where ancient civilizations and modern creativity coexist. Built upon the Roman city of Serdica and framed by the majestic Vitosha Mountain, it is one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited capitals. Layers of Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Bulgarian heritage form a living museum that continues to inspire artists, scholars, and visitors.

Known for its “triangle of religious tolerance” — where Christian, Jewish, and Muslim landmarks rise within sight of one another — Sofia embodies a spirit of openness and cultural dialogue. Its vibrant art scene, with renowned institutions such as the National Opera and Ballet, the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, and the National Gallery, places the city at the heart of Southeastern Europe’s creative life.

Surrounded by mountains and mineral springs, Sofia offers an extraordinary blend of natural beauty, architectural grandeur, and artistic energy. Its audiences are deeply musical, its history rich, and its atmosphere alive with possibility — making it the ideal home for the Sofia Art and Music Festival.

THE ORCHESTRA

Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra

Founded in 1892 as the Royal Orchestra and transformed in 1945 into the National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sofia Philharmonic has long stood at the center of Bulgaria’s cultural life. Over more than a century, it has become one of Eastern Europe’s most distinguished symphonic institutions — a symbol of artistic excellence and national pride.

Throughout its history, the orchestra has worked with some of the greatest figures in twentieth- and twenty-first-century music. Among its distinguished conductors are Bruno Walter, Kurt Masur, Sir Neville Marriner, Valery Gergiev, Marin Alsop, Charles Dutoit, Yuri Temirkanov, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Igor Markevich. Its soloists have included an equally illustrious list: Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Sonya Yoncheva, Martha Argerich, David Oistrakh, Mstislav Rostropovich, Emil Gilels, Alexis Weissenberg, and Maxim Vengerov, among many others.

The Sofia Philharmonic’s repertoire embraces the full scope of symphonic literature — from the classical canon to contemporary premieres — and it has introduced dozens of new Bulgarian compositions to the world stage. Its collaborations with living composers and dedication to musical innovation have earned it a central place in the country’s modern artistic identity.

The orchestra’s recordings for Balkanton, Gega, Naxos, Supraphon, Capriccio, and other international labels, together with broadcasts on major European radio networks, have brought Bulgarian symphonic artistry to audiences across the globe. The Philharmonic’s numerous tours throughout Europe, Asia, and North America have been met with enthusiastic acclaim, confirming its reputation as one of the most dynamic ensembles in the region.

Among its many honors are Bulgaria’s most prestigious cultural distinctions: the Musician of the Year Award (Bulgarian National Radio), the Golden Lyre, the Crystal Lyre, the Sofia Award, and the Honorary Badge of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria.

Since 2017, the orchestra has been led by Maestro Nayden Todorov, whose artistry and vision have elevated the ensemble to new heights of international recognition. Under his leadership, the Philharmonic continues to balance tradition with discovery — honoring its historical legacy while embracing the music of our time.

The Sofia Philharmonic performs at the Bulgaria Concert Complex — Bulgaria Hall, one of the city’s architectural treasures and the nation’s foremost venue for symphonic music. Built in 1937 and restored after World War II, the hall is celebrated for its exceptional acoustics and elegant design. Today it serves not only as the home of the Philharmonic but as a living symbol of Sofia’s enduring commitment to art.

ART

Art is a vibrant and integral part of the Sofia Art and Music Festival. It reflects the same spirit of creativity, collaboration, and imagination that defines the festival’s music-making.

In 2026, we are delighted to welcome Li Zhang and Elena Panayotova, among other distinguished artists, whose work will enrich the festival with color, form, and emotion. Their exhibitions will unfold within the Bulgaria Concert Complex, turning its spaces into an evolving gallery that celebrates artistic dialogue.

At SAMF, the encounter between music and visual art is an extraordinary experience. Rehearsals, concerts, and exhibitions flow together, inspiring participants and audiences alike. The integration of these artistic worlds brings new energy to every moment of the festival — a reminder that creativity knows no boundaries.

We look forward to sharing these exhibitions and celebrating the remarkable convergence of sound and image during the 2026 festival season.
